London Southend Airport Terminals

2012 was the year when the new Southend Airport really took off. As the runway extension became operational, our new passenger terminal building was officially opened by Secretary of State for Transport Justine Greening in March 2012. This enabled us to handle a new generation of medium capacity, high-efficiency jets for short-haul scheduled flights and holiday charters.

London Southend Airport History

The airport was built by the British Air Force during World War I. In 1939, the aviation authorities requisitioned an airfield and became known as RAF Rochford during World War II. During World War II, the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane fighters, as well as the Bristol Blenheim fighter, were based at the airport. Many of the 50 bunkers that were built to protect the airport from the possible landing are still intact, including the underground control room, which is located near the Southend Flying Club. About 20 more pillboxes can be seen in the vicinity of the airport. In 1946, the airfield was decommissioned and returned to civil aviation in 1947, known as Southend Municipal Airport.
