Náxos attracts a rather different clientele than neighbouring Páros or Mýkonos – with folk willing to accept the occasional rough-and-ready-ness of the island, and able to look after themselves. While the main town’s medieval Boúrgos and Kástro districts have ample interest, the real USP is the Naxian backcountry, especially its mountain villages, hidden churches and southwest coast beaches.
Impossible to miss is the portal (called the Portára locally), all that was completed of the Temple of Delian Apollo on an islet immediately north of town, now tethered to the mainland with a causeway. It dates from the time of local ruler Lygdamis. Even more imposing is the skilfully reconstructed temple of Demeter at Gyroúla beyond Sangrí village, on a hilltop overlooking a fertile valley settled since the Archaic era. The grounds are always open, though a small display of on-site finds works only.
Another popular thing to do in Naxos town is to watch the sun set behind the Portara — the ancient entrance to an unfinished temple dedicated to the god Apollo. The “gate” faces directly toward Delos, Apollo’s birthplace, and is basically the only remnant of the temple still standing from the 6th century. The temple sits on a little island connected to Naxos by a causeway and is by far the most popular spot to catch a sunset from.
Explore the Venetian Castle which is one of the most historic top things to do in Naxos Town. The castle, called kastro in Greek, has kept its medieval atmosphere. There you can visit the Venetian Museum of Naxos. Every summer, a music and cultural festival called the Domus Festival is held at the castle.
Naxos Town is lined with beautiful little shops, boutiques selling handmade products, from art, sculptures to jewelry. Also, be sure to pop into a few local food shops for foodie souvenirs like the local citrus liqueur called kitron, dried herbs and teas picked from the island’s landscape, local cheeses and locally produced wine.
