Famous for its religious past, Patmos is the island where Saint John the Theologian wrote the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse). Today, this beautiful island with the spiritual vibes is a popular religious destination, with pilgrims coming to visit the Monastery of Saint John and the Cave of Apocalypse. These two monuments are the most important sightseeing in Patmos. The island also has nice and calm beaches for beach holidays, some organized and others totally secluded.
Visit the Monastry of st John The monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos is the most significant cultural and religious centre on the island which is visible from every part of the island and is perhaps, the first thing one will notice, as it sits high on the hill above Chora. The monastery was established by Agios Christodoulos after the donation of Alexios Komnenos I in 1088.
The Cave of Apocalypse in Patmos, The cave of the Apocalypse was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in the year 2006. It is located halfway between the Port of Patmos in Skala and Patmos Town. The place is also known as the Holy Grotto and is an extraordinary example of a traditional pilgrimage centre of outstanding architectural interest. The cave is 6.60 m long and 5.50 m wide and has been encased within a sanctuary.
The Ecclesiastical Museum of Patmos is located in the premises of the Monastery of Saint John, on top of Chora, the capital of the island. This is a small but interesting museum that houses portable icons from the Byzantine and post Byzantine times, priest vestments, valuable manuscripts, items used in the Holy Mass and others.
The islands of Arki and Marathi are found in a close distance off Patmos, only 8 n.m. to the east, and daily boats connect them to Patmos. The biggest of the two islets is Arki, which is tiny (7 sq. km) and protected by strong winds, which is why it is used as a shelter for yachts and fishing boats. In fact, Arki has a small port for the boats and ferries to moor. Around this port, a few stone houses have been constructed, some of which are old while others have been white washed. Some taverns also offer fresh fish, fished by the locals at night.
