Kavala, a northern city in Macedonia, Greece, is the capital and main port of the Kavala prefecture. Built like an amphitheater on the slopes of Mount Symvolo, it is one of the most picturesque cities in Greece, blessed with historic buildings that possess a modern character.
There are a number of historic castles near Kavala, including the Castle of Kavala, which sits on top of a hill and has views of the entire area. The Byzantine Castle of Paleachori also boasts great views of the Drama mountains.
The Cosmoplolis International Festival,the festival which takes place in mid-July, and its basic goal is to celebrate the multiculturalism of Greece and Macedonia and to foster the importance of cultural differences. It has been in existence since the year 2000.
There are a large number of churches and monasteries in the surrounding area, including Agios St. Panteleimonas, the Monastery of Nikites (built in 1370) and St. Lydia’s Baptistry (St. Lydia was St. Paul’s first European convert to Christianity and she was baptized here). Most areas of these are easily accessible to the public, who can also attend services at some of the churches.
The Municipal Museum of Kavala This museum helps you to relive the history of the town. It has a large collection of modern Greek art, and also has a large collection of the Greek sculpture of Polygnotas. The museum is open 6 days a week, and admission is free.
The Hotel Imaret The hotel was built in 1817, and is a great example of Ottoman architecture. It was originally built as an educational center and was donated to the town by its builder Mohamed Ali Pasha, who is considered the founder of modern Egypt. The hotel Imaret sits high on a hilltop and offers magnificent views of Kavala and the sea.
